Innovative UK is offering Funding to Support the Future of Aviation Systems & Technologies

With many technologies going airborne, the future is bright for players in the flight sector.

UK firms specializing in such services and tech have up to July 1, 2020, to benefit from a government funding that seeks to ensure the smooth and safe operation of these new air transport methods.

This offer came after the UK government allotted a whopping £125 million in an Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund Future Flight Challenge to support the future of aviation in the nation. The fund will help players develop public-safe systems and operations to make the United Kingdom number one in aviation markets. 

The goal is to minimize the adverse effects on the environment and enhance the connectivity of flying taxis, delivery drones, electric aircraft, and other airborne innovations.

These futuristic modes must be built and engineered to fit into existing facilities like airports and air routes. The governement's idea is to have these new models operate both in cities and remote areas.

The aviation sector must now develop new services and build systems to perfection to earn public trust. Innovate UK, the agency responsible for disbursement, has access to up to £30 million, from the fund to back projects that create integrated air systems for new electric & autonomous aircraft.

The Project Must Seek to Streamline the flight of aircraft in all areas
The program's goal is to support projects that aim to create and demonstrate connected air systems that allow delivery drones and electric aircraft to fly in and out of existing airports, in cities and remote areas.
In developing their systems, companies should pay attention to this list of matters:

  • Air traffic management 
  • Unmanned traffic management systems
  • Non-aerospace regulation
  • Physical & digital infrastructure to support future flight
  • viable, challenging, use cases
  • Autonomy
  • Digital & communications systems
  • New business & service models
  • Public endorsement 
  • Connected transport systems
  • vehicle tech permitting integration to new air systems
  • Total security systems
  • Simulation
The funding is on and is being distributed in two Tiers that run simultaneously. Tier 1 focuses on quick forge-ahead projects, while Tier 2 seeks to support firms taking on more complicated and demanding projects.
